UPDATE: August 15, 2010 - Even before the earthquake, Hands Of Humanity was in the process of re-focusing our efforts to concentrate on rural development in Haiti and other developing countries. The recent earthquake has only solidified this decision. HOH's mission is helping people to help themselves. We will be in Haiti in early October 2010. IMAGINE LIFE FOR MILLIONS IN HAITI

* Imagine that you live in a country where the unemployment rate was 80% (it's 9.5% in the US and we are in a deep recession)

* Imagine that if on a good day, you had to work in the blazing sun 12-14 hrs for a measely $2. Now imagine a pound of rice costs $3, a gallon of fuel costs $6, firewood for cooking two meals costs over $1.

* Imagine that the only water you had to drink was so contaminated it was not even fit for animals. US toilet bowl water is far cleaner.

* Imagine that you were so hungry, you resorted to eating dirt (*Click photo above)

* Imagine your house had a dirt floor, your walls were made of cardboard and your roof was discarded piece of sheet metal.

* Imagine that you could never send your children to school because you couldn't afford the $20 a month to send them?

* Imagine that there was absolutely no social net available. No food stamps, no unemployment check, no subsidized housing...nothing. The government is at best useless. You are totally on your own.

* Imagine that ever having a steady job, owning a car, getting an education, not worrying about where your next meal was coming from, having a future.... is only a DREAM.
